Kwik Kombos™
Multi-Species Mix

Garden Specifications
Garden height: 8–18” (20–45 cm) tall
Garden width: 12–18” (30–45 cm) wide
Exposure: Full Sun
USDA zone: 9–11
AHS zone: 12–2
Product use: Containers, Hanging Baskets, Patio Pots
Propagation of Unrooted Cuttings
Root emergence: 6–8 to 10–12 days depending on species
Rooting hormone: Not recommended
Bottom heat temperature: 70–74 °F (21–24 °C)
Misting: Group Kwik Kombos™ vegetative mixes into species with short, medium and long misting times. For combinations with more than one species mist according to slower rooting species. Mist schedules vary depending on light and temperature conditions. Apply just enough moisture to rehydrate the cuttings and prevent them from wilting. Cuttings should be hydrated and in a non-wilted stage within 24 hours after sticking. Cuttings that continue to wilt heavily after 24 hours will callus unevenly and will be delayed in rooting. CapSil® (spray adjuvant) can be sprayed on the cuttings at a rate of 2–4 oz/100 gal within 1–2 days after sticking to help in rehydration of the cuttings. Misting should be significantly reduced after 2–3 days and after cuttings become fully hydrated. Petunias and verbena are particularly sensitive to over-misting. Petunias and verbena root quickly, and applying too much mist can lead to chlorotic and deformed foliage and growing tips. Ensure thorough media contact with Kwik Kombos™ containing species such as lobelia, calibrachoa and scaevola.
Recommended tray size: 50-cell (40 mm) or larger; Kwik Kombos™ multi-liners are by definition larger-celled plugs that contain multiple species, either as a 2 or 3 species, rooted combination.
Propagation timing: Rooting time will vary according to species and plug size. Five weeks is common for most species in 50-cell plug trays (possibly shorter for summer programmed crops). Six weeks is often required for Kwik Kombos™ which contain warm season crops such as lantana, angelonia, and scaevola.
Temperature
Day: 72–74 °F (22–23 °C)
Night: 72–74 °F (22–23 °C)
Lighting
Light intensity: 200–250 µmol·m−2·s−1 for the first two weeks after sticking or until root development occurs. Light levels can be increased up to 600 µmol·m−2·s−1 as rooting increases and the cutting matures.
Daily light integral (DLI): 4–6 mol·m−2·d−1 for the first two weeks after sticking or until root development occurs. DLI can be increased to greater than 12 mol·m−2·d−1 after root formation.
Media pH: 5.8–6.2
Media EC: SME EC: 0.9–1.3 mS/cm, Press/Squeeze Method EC: 1.4–2.0 mS/cm
Fertilizer: Begin fertilization at 100 ppm nitrogen when roots become visible. Rates can be increased up to 200 ppm nitrogen after roots become well developed. Use primarily Cal-Mag® Plus (Calcium nitrate + Magnesium nitrate) fertilizers in propagation to prevent unwanted stretch.
Pinching: Recommended. Pinch 2.5–3 weeks after sticking. Use proper sanitation practices when pinching.
Plant growth regulators (PGRs): To control growth after rooting, a spray of B-Nine® WSG plant growth regulator (PGR) at 2,000–2,500 ppm works well for many species and can be sprayed before and after pinching to keep the cuttings compact and well branched.
Finishing
Temperature
Early and Mid Season Combos
Day: 70–72 °F (21–22 °C)
Night: 62–64 °F (17–18 °C)
Average daily temperature: 66–68 °F (19–20 °C)
Mid-Late and Late Season Combos
Day: 76–78 °F (24–26 °C)
Night: 70–72 °F (21–22 °C)
Average daily temperature: 73–75 °F (23–24 °C)
Lighting
Day extension lighting: Beneficial to 14 hours
Light intensity: 800–1,200 µmol·m−2·s−1
Daily light integral (DLI): 16–18 mol·m−2·d−1
Transplanting: Transplant one multi-liner into 1.25 quarts and gallon pots and three multi-liners into 10–12" baskets. Transplant directly into the finished container. Place the rooting media slightly below the level of media in the container. Make sure the root ball is covered and that the rooted liners are situated in the pot to deliver balance and growth for the central and outer branches of the Kwik Kombo™.
Media pH: 5.8–6.2
Media EC: SME EC: 1.5–2.7 mS/cm, PourThru EC: 2.0–3.5 mS/cm
Fertilizer: 200–250 ppm N
Pinching: A second pinch can be given to plants in large pots and baskets (trimming branches along the edge of the containers) to increase branching and control growth.
Plant growth regulators (PGRs): Sprays of B-Nine® WSG at 2,500–3,500 ppm work well on most crops. For lantana mixes, Bonzi® sprays of 15–20 ppm are recommended. Sprays of Florel® at 350–500 ppm can be used early on, especially on calibrachoa, verbena and petunia combinations. Do not apply Florel® on angelonia. Bonzi® drenches work well about 3–4 weeks before finishing. Start with drench rates between 2–3 ppm for KK's containing verbenas, petunias, and calibrachoa and 0.5–1 ppm for KK's containing bidens, scaevola, and lobelia.
Crop times: Finish times for compact to medium sized plants will vary from 4–7 weeks depending on time of the year, temperatures, light conditions and container size. The production time for large plants (especially if a second pinch is done) will be between 7–10 weeks. Add 1–2 weeks production time for lantana mixes.
Moisture level: Media should be allowed to dry between irrigations. Alternate between moisture level 2 and 4.
2 - MEDIUM: Soil is light brown in color, no water can be extracted from soil, and soil will crumble apart.
4 - WET: Soil is dark brown but not shiny, no free water is seen at the surface of the soil, when pressed or squeezed water drips easily, and trays are heavy with a visible bend in the middle.
Common pests: Aphids, Thrips, Budworms, Leaf Miners, Whiteflies
Common diseases: Botrytis, Powdery mildew, Viruses (TMV, TSWV)
Tech tip: Try Chrysal Alesco®, a postharvest foliar spray, to protect ethylene sensitive crops during shipping and retail.
Scheduling

Yes, during transport, plants experience a lot of stress and when plants are stressed they can release ethylene. Higher temperatures, enclosed spaces, and damage to the plants increase the ethylene concentrations in the shipping environment.
