Golden Gate Pot Mums for Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is one of the most important and widely celebrated holidays in China and other Asian countries. This vibrant festival, marking the beginning of the lunar new year, is steeped in rich traditions and symbolism. Among the many customs associated with this auspicious occasion, the chrysanthemum, or "mum," holds a special place. These elegant flowers are not only prized for their beauty but also carry deep cultural significance. Chrysanthemums symbolize longevity, good luck, and resilience, making them a popular and meaningful decoration during this festive period. Yellow mums, in particular, are highly valued, as the color represents wealth, prosperity, and power. These golden blooms are believed to attract good fortune and financial success making them a favored choice for home decorations and gifts as a colorful reminder of the hopes for prosperity in the year ahead.

Golden Gate™ in 6” containers are perfect for impulse purchases or gifts, while larger pots sizes like 12” containers make elegant display pieces in homes.

Tech Tips

  • Most Golden Gate crops don’t receive a pinch. This crop does not get a pinch; therefore, plants do not branch and more cuttings per pot are required compared to a pinched pot mum crop.
  • Plant odd numbers per pot as even numbers are considered unlucky.
  • Use night interruption (NI) lighting to provide long days (short nights) by supplying 2-4 µmol.m-2.sec-1 from 10 pm - 2 am each night. Confirm your NI is working as planned before URCs arrive.
  • When Sticking be sure to place a portion of the cuttings (depending on pot size) in the center of the pot, not just around the edges as done in pinched pot mum crops.
    • 6” pot – 7ppp – 6 around the edge, 1 in the middle
    • 10” pot – 11ppp – 8-9 around the edge, 2-3 in the middle
    • IF growing a pinched Golden Gate crop, stick all the cuttings around the edge of the pot.
  • PGR during propagation is critical for a Golden Gate crop to manage plant height and uniformity as no pinching is done for this crop.  Use a B-Nine® WSG spray at 2,500-5,000 ppm 4-5 days after sticking (after roots have initiated) and again 7 days after the first application.
  • Lower the night temperature to 56-60 °F during the final 3-4 weeks of development to enhance flower color and strengthen stems.
  • Reduce or eliminate fertilizer rate to target a substrate EC of 1.25-2.5 mS/cm (PourThru method) to improve postharvest longevity at the time of disbudding.
