Our History
Syngenta Flowers has over 120 years' experience in the flower sector. But how did it all start? Discover our rich and colourful history with the slides below.
1867
Sluis en Groot was founded in 1867. The company was stationed in a farm house in Andijk (the Netherlands) where the founders Nanne Groot, Nanne Sluis and Simon Groot lived, worked and stored their seeds until they moved to Enkhuizen in 1871.
1910
In 1901 Sluis & Groot became active in flowers. More storage was required so the historic warehouse from the West-Indies Company was used by Sluis & Groot around 1910.
1917
In 1917 we became royal and in 1936 we won the AAS Gold Medal for our Petunia Grandiflora 'Flaming Velvet'.
1956
In 1956 we actively started our own breeding. In the seventies this resulted in the introduction of Pelargonium, Cherie, F1 Hybrid Impatiens, Minette, Pelargonium Sprinter and Cyclamen Rosamunde.
2000
In 1997 we introduced the first of its range own bred annual cutting Bacopa “Cabana”. In 2000 Novartis and AstraZeneca merged their agribusinesses to form Syngenta, the first global group focusing exclusively on agribusiness.
2001
In 2001 we introduced the Xtray. The solution for sustainable transportation for our young plants.
2012
In 2007 and 2008 Syngenta acquired Goldsmith and Fischer and in 2012 Syngenta Flowers' Chrysanthemums colored the gardens of the White House.
2020
In 2017-2019 we introduced Imara, Calliope and we prelaunched Sunfinity. In 2020 we won the FleuroStar Award for our Dahlia Sincerity and in 2021 we introduced the Xcarrier.
