Pelargonium zonale Rosebud Astrid is a distinctive zonal geranium known for its romantic rosebud-style blooms and dependable performance through the season. With an upright growth habit and strong flowering, it is well suited to both indoor enjoyment and outdoor displays, offering a premium look that also performs reliably for growers and home gardeners.

In 2021, Rosebud Astrid was awarded Geranium of the Year by the Swedish industry organisation Blomsterfrämjandet. The recognition reflects not only its ornamental appeal but also its ability to deliver consistent results in real-life conditions.

What immediately sets Rosebud Astrid apart is its flower form. The plant produces double blooms that shimmer in changing tones of pink and apricot, packed tightly together so each flower head resembles a small, carefully arranged bouquet. An especially interesting characteristic is that the colour expression varies with placement: grown indoors, the flowers tend to take on a more apricot tone, while outdoor conditions bring out a more pinkish look.
The foliage contributes just as much to the overall effect. The leaves are a fresh, lively green and feature a broad, undulating chocolate-brown zonal marking.

Rosebud Astrid is valued not only for beauty but also for stamina. It delivers floral impact indoors and outdoors, flowers throughout summer, and is noted for holding up well in weather. This is particularly meaningful for double-flowered geraniums, which can sometimes be prone to rain damage, yet Rosebud Astrid is described as maintaining its quality even when conditions are less than ideal.

Grower Anders Haglund of Torsång Handelsträdgård in Dalarna, Sweden, praised the variety after producing it in 2021, calling it one of the best Pelargoniums of the Year they have had. He highlighted its fantastic flowers, its stability in cultivation, and its strong performance with end customers.

Breeder Ronald Snijder explains that the variety is rooted in another personal passion of his: roses. He says: “Rosebud Astrid is a unique pelargonium with classical, heirloom-shaped flowers that evoke a 19th-century feel*, delivered on a plant that remains commercially growable and practical for modern production.”

With its upright habit and maximum size of 40 cm wide and tall, Rosebud Astrid is an excellent choice for containers and pots on patios, balconies, and entrances, and it also performs beautifully in borders.

*Fun fact: The Rosebud Pelargoniums, in which Rosebud Astrid is grouped, first became very popular in the second half of the 19th century.
