They work in the low lands of Vietnam where the climate is quite hot and humid. Heat tolerant genetics are therefore a must-have for them.
Their interest goes out to colorful innovative varieties, like Dianthus, Impatiens, Tagetes and Begonia. They prefer to work with seed varieties. But they need varieties with which they can manage the timing of their production carefully, to deliver to their channel partners in time in full.
Mr. and Mrs. Nguyen sell their ready products to local flower shops in the Ho Chi Minh City. Shop owners know the Nguyens for their high quality standards and clean products.
Nguyen Thai Sang: "We test new varieties every year. We select them on suitability for our production. That means they need to have the best heat tolerance. But they should also be able to cope with high humidity. Currently we are looking for new colorful varieties that we can sell during the Lunar New Year season, when prices are good. Programmability is important, because we need to plan when the plants should flower."

Technical Sales Manager Nguen Le Minh Triét is visiting them, now they have trial several new products: "The growers are very interested in our Begonia Tophat. Tophat has two unique strenghts. It is very fast to finish. With its good branching habit, Tophat fills the pot on average two weeks earlier than benchmark varieties. And secondly it has large extra flowers in four bright colors: white, pink, scarlet this unique rose bicolor."

Another item of interest was the Tagetes triploid Zenith red. Zenith comes from the Floranova pipeline, the company acquired by Syngenta Flowers in 2018. The Floranova portfolio is well-known for its heat resistance varieties, suitable for tropical climates like in Vietnam. Triét: "Zenith is a truly unique variety. It is next level breeding, because it has the flower power of African Marigold on a compact French Marigold plant habit. Zenith combines more branching, more flowers with the tolerance for heat and rain. Zenith has no seed set, and requires no dead heading to maintain its phenomenal flower power all summer long. I am so happy that we are now introducing this outstanding variety in my country. Marigold is a very important crop for us and this breeding innovation is welcomed by growers all over the country."
